2017 Varsity Boys Soccer Season

It’s fun to coach and watch the Boys become leaders. My vision this year after losing seven seniors from last years squad was to do a couple of tournaments early in the season so we could figure out where to improve what we are strong at.

We had a couple of key guys injured early on. It was really a great time although we suffered a few defeats in that first tournament.  Kyle Karowich tore his ACL and was missing the first 2 weeks of the year. Meanwhile the blessing out of something like that is the younger guys have a chance to get some playing time that they might not have done early in the season

The expectations are always to have a successful season, but a big part of these tournaments is to get the guys moulded in as a unit. I feel like we have done that in the past few seasons where we spend time and the guys get a trust for each other, and start to have confidence in other by playing these min 30 minute games.

We have five freshmen this year and four out of five have played middle school with us since 5th grade, so they were four years into the program, and they gave all come off the bench and done a great job. Austin Nye has done well and had a few starts. Justin Lynch and Luke Myers have also come off the bench and done well every game.  Excited to see how the guys develop. Also Jake strunk and Nick Collindres have also contributed as freshman too. We also picked up two players last year that we got back from Canada, Kyle and Kipp Karowich. Those were two previous year newcomers. Kyle is like a point guard on the floor who seizes everything, and gets everyone together. There is great leadership between him and the three captains with Steven Diamond and also Jesse Westera.

Auston Pellegrino has steped up in goal scoring ( 1st tournament we had 5 mini games and only one goal scored)
He has scored 28 since that time

Alex Nye, our keeper has really shown great leadership working with lot of first year starters on Defence

Now going into the playoffs we were 10-2-1 in the reg season and I think the guys need more of an urgency now as you know it’s either win or you’re done. We will play in 2 tournaments, the Conference tournament and the boys have won home field and a 1st round bye by coming in 1st place in the east. So the excitement of enjoying the moment but also the urgency knowing we’ve worked hard for eight weeks and you want them to keep building so they get to their best this time of year. Im excited because the guys have worked hard and practiced and committed to doing that. Go Eagles

Again we struggle in 1st tournament ( 5 mini games and 10 goals allowed ) Since that time we have given up only 15 goals in 13 games

2017 Varsity Girls Soccer Season

It was a great privilege to coach the Varsity Girls Soccer Team this year (called Football in England where I come from). My daughter Hailey was the only senior, and we had plenty of 11th graders for sure. We had our ups and downs which I know is not uncommon. Early on we worked on conditioning, since you do have to run in this sport. After Easter we hit the outdoors and combined repetitive skill-enhancing drills with small game scenario practices to improve passing and communication.

As the season progressed, the team showed commitment, determination, persistence, and courage. Courage is doing what you are afraid to do, and they really upped their game this year.  Colossians 3:23 says ‘Whatever you do, do it wholeheartedly, enthusiastically’.

The greatest sideline moment for me as a coach was when the players gathered for prayer as Hailey, our sticker was down injured in the semi final as we trailed 2-0 to Perry Hall.  She got hit in a collision with the keeper, and seemed to suffer a mild concussion. It was a moment of relief when she made it back on her feet and was able to jump back into action!

This semi final truly turned out to be the greatest game. We were  down 2-0 and the opponent was building their lead. What do you say to the girls as their heads were down? I looked at them and with confidence said, “There’s nothing more rewarding than a comeback”.  Moments later Maddy scored a screamer from about 25 yards, right out of nowhere, right before the half-time whistle. After the break, we turned the game around as Hailey scored a hat trick, hitting the back of the net 3 times. The final whistle blew and we had booked our place in the final. What a comeback!

We hadnt been in a final for about 8 years, so there was plenty of excitement as we faced an in-form Redeemer side. It was a well fought game, but we ended up losing 1-0 despite scoring a late goal ruled offside by the linesman. Watching the video afterwards showed Maddy was actually level with the defender. Anyway, it was awesome to reach the final.

Lastly the rewards:

Olivia Braganza – ‘Fortress Award’ -backbone of the defense, gave 100%, ran hard and never gave up

Mackenzie Densmore‘Not in My House’ Award -Never gave opponents an inch, pulled of the crucial tackle just at the right time

Jasmin Fields – ‘Most Improved Player’  -Strong defensive performances, improved much from last season. Feisty

Maddy Weyer. ‘Playmaker Award’  -Got to play out on the field this season. She had the strength to beat players, and deliver quality crosses, many of which resulted in goals

Hailey Nye – ‘Top Scorer & MVP’ -Captain, scored 12 goals this season and many assists, always gave 100%, controlled the ball well, a couple of times turned 2 defenders, but always produced the quality pass to keep the play alive.

Thanks to all the girls this year, and Rob Huber as my assistant coach who was a huge help to the team

– Paul Nye, coach
