Charles Williams (1886-1945) was a British author most known for his association with C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. Producing such novels as The War in Heaven (1930) and The Place of the Lion (1931), Williams’ work was marked for its blending of the thriller genre with sophisticated spiritual themes. Though his books acquired a following, both in his lifetime and after, his plays have faded into obscurity. Working to revive the verse and morality play, Williams wrote plays from the thirties until his death.

His plays The House by the Stable (1939) and Grab and Grace (1941) fall into the category of morality play, a type of medieval allegory that depicts both character and idea simultaneously. Though little known, it is these plays that have grasped some of the deeper religious concepts that Williams was vastly interested in during his life.
